HARLAN DIBLES POEM

A TRIBUTE TO THE USS MITCHELL - DE43

She started as nothing.

But blueprints and plans

An assemblage to be made

By experienced hands.

Laid down in January of ’43

She rapidly took shape for all to see

And by Mid November

Was ready for sea.

The officers and crew

Came from points near and far.

An assortment who came

By trains, buses and cars.

Each one assumed duties

Before never tried

And soon were performing

With a new sense of pride.

The crew gained experience

With each hour underway.

The camaraderie developed

Still lasts to this day.

All hands were dependent

Upon each shipmate aboard

To provide comfort and safety

With no thought of reward

We weathered the storms

And survived through the war

Returned to our homes

Resuming life as before

To the U.S.S. Mitchell

And the entire crew

I say "JOB WELL DONE"

To each of you!
